The Club
The Origami Club was founded in the spring of 2009 by two origami enthusiasts at Dartmouth, Kenny Baclawski and Shengzhi Li. They desired to create a forum at the College where students could learn to fold, experienced folders could be free to share, and all members could give to the community the art of origami. The Art
Origami is the Japanese word 折り紙, that literally means to fold paper. It was practiced in East Asia, most prominently in Japan, as well as in the West by the Moors. The art combines series of relatively simple folds to produce every kind of model, ranging from the classic crane to beautiful roses to virtuosic violin players.Numerous forms of origami exist, including:
- Traditional origami, exemplified by models such as the crane, the iris, and the waterbomb.
- Modular origami, combining numerous unit modules to form one work.
- Mathematical origami, developed in the 20th century by exponents such as Robert Lang and Meguro Toshiyuki.
- Active origami, origami that moves!
- Tesselation origami, origami of a tiled plane.
